If you listen to callers on talk radio shows across the nation, you have a good feel for the negative response of the conservative base to being force fed this immigration amnesty bill. Many Americans feel that GOP members in Washington, from the President down to the lowliest freshman, have lost touch with their constituents and do not care about their opinion. There is one way to get their attention, however, and that is and always has been money.
I have personally told RNC fundraisers why my check book is closed, sent back their mail solicitations with notes on why my check book is closed, and have sent emails directly to the chairman telling him why my check book is closed. Apparently many other registered Republicans have taken similar action and it is being noticed:
Several of the solicitors fired at the May 24 meeting reported declining contributions and a donor backlash against the immigration proposals now being pushed by Mr. Bush and Senate Republicans.
"Every donor in 50 states we reached has been angry, especially in the last month and a half, and for 99 percent of them immigration is the No. 1 issue," said a fired phone bank employee who said the severance pay the RNC agreed to pay him was contingent on his not criticizing the national committee. Story
As I have mentioned in an earlier post, I was a very strong Bush supporter for many years. I have been a contributing member of the RNC, RSC, and RCC but have not sent a dime this year. I truly believe that there is a disconnect between the GOP and its conservative base. From issues ranging from immigration and runaway spending to global warming, they act as if their base will take what ever they do and support them like lemmings walking off a cliff. I suppose that this is due to the assumption that the base hates the Democrats so much that they will not turn their back on the Grand Old Party. Did they not learn anything from the mid-term elections?
As if he has decided to run the full gambit and add insult to injury, President Bush has now done a 180 on Global warming. After years of standing firm on this issue he has, and I can’t believe I’m saying this, flip – flopped on the issue.
George W. Bush on Thursday unveiled a striking about-face on global warming, calling on the world’s leading economies to join the US in agreeing a global target to reduce carbon dioxide emissions before the end of his term in office.
The US president was speaking just ahead of a G8 summit at which climate change was expected to be high on the agenda of European governments. He explained that his apparent conversion – which follows almost seven years of having rejected precisely the road he outlined – was prompted by new scientific findings. Story
The President claims that there is new scientific evidence supporting this tree hugging boondoggle. The mainstream media hype has done a masterful job of only talking to scientists who support his theory. The scientists who don’t support it face the possibility of losing their funding if they don’t toe the line on this issue. Never mind the fact that the earth has gone through 7 ice ages and warmed up each time without industrialized man’s help. Never mind that as recently as the 1970s the conventional wisdom was that we were headed for the next ice age. All in all, this is a money making issue and they will play it out at our expense until there is no more money to be made.
Anyone who has been to Mexico, Central America, or Asia has seen first hand that the pollution there is what is out of control. If someone truly believes that man is “destroying” the planet then they should put the pressure on developing nations and leave one of the cleanest countries in the world alone. Further impacting the taxpayers of the United States and putting more restrictions on the people of this Nation is not going to have any impact on the world. We are already light years ahead of the third world in terms of reducing pollution.
Imagine how imposing further fuel regulations will impact an already strained refining system. We already are producing somewhere in the neighborhood of 50+ blends of gasoline to comply with individual state regulations on emissions. The knee jerk reactions to the President’s 180 will probably put further strain on an already maxed out system. Even if the United States were running at zero emissions, it would not impact the drivers in Mexico City, Bangkok, or Beijing. There must be money in it to make the President make such a radical about face on his position and further alienate his conservative base. Let your check books speak out on this issue as well.
