Tax Day Tea Parties, the 10th Amendment, and More

Momentum is growing Nationwide to reign in the Federal Government’s unprecedented growth and consolidation of power. To begin with tomorrow there will be Nationwide tax day tea parties to protest the Federal Government’s stated intent to increase taxes while increasing the deficit exponentially. The people will be taking to the streets and protesting the tax and spend philosophy of the Obama administration in a tribute to our forefather’s protest to the taxation imposed by King George.

Additionally, there is a growing movement among state leaders to assert their sovereignty as provided by the 10th amendment to the Constitution. The latest of these is Texas Governor Rick Perry who publicly spoke about the growing oppressive nature of the Federal Government and its policies:

“I believe that our federal government has become oppressive in its size, its intrusion into the lives of our citizens, and its interference with the affairs of our state. That is why I am here today to express my unwavering support for efforts all across our country to reaffirm the states’ rights affirmed by the Tenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. I believe that returning to the letter and spirit of the U.S. Constitution and its essential 10th Amendment will free our state from undue regulations, and ultimately strengthen our Union.”  See the video at Breitbart TV

In addition to invoking the 10th amendment, conservatives are working along other avenues to reign in the runaway power grab by the Obama administration. Recently Rep. John Shadegg, R-Ariz., sponsored House Resolution 450, the Enumerated Powers Act, in an attempt to force Congress to be accountable to the Constitution when writing and passing laws. After all, the Constitution is the basis for our form of government and all our laws are assumed to be held to the standards it sets forth. HR 450 in essence would force Congress to define the constitutional basis for the laws it writes:

"Each Act of Congress shall contain a concise and definite statement of the constitutional authority relied upon for the enactment of each portion of that Act. The failure to comply with this section shall give rise to a point of order in either House of Congress. …" Story

As the Obama administration continues to impose its will and expand the power of the Federal Government it will be interesting to see how many states stand up for their rights as guaranteed under the Constitution and how many bend to his will.

The Vatican Rejects Obama Appointees

It is about time that American Catholics saw something other than rhetoric from the Vatican regarding American politicians who claim to be Roman Catholic while openly defying Church doctrine. Nancy Pelosi, the Kennedy family and many other Democrat politicians have not been shy about openly displaying their support for abortion and embryonic stem cell research. Their embrace of the culture of death has been going on for years and the Church has basically turned the other cheek. Finally, Pope Benedict XVI has taken a small step and rejected President Obama’s appointments as ambassadors to the Vatican:

Vatican sources told Il Giornale that their support for abortion disqualified Ms Kennedy and other Roman Catholics President Barack Obama had been seeking to appoint.

Mr Obama was reportedly seeking to reward John F Kennedy's daughter, who publicly gave her support to his election bid. She had been poised to replace Hillary Clinton as New York senator, but dropped out amid criticism that she lacked enough experience for the job. Story

As an American member of the Roman Catholic Church I applaud the Pope for standing firm on the sanctity of life and holding American politicians accountable in some measure for the positions they take. The next battle to be fought over this issue will be the right of Roman Catholic doctors who refuse to perform abortions and pharmacists who refuse to sell the morning after abortion pill. It is their right to refuse, but if the government attempts to force them to perform these heinous duties, there is sure to be tremendous backlash. Perhaps this situation will persuade the Pope to take a long look at the possibility of excommunication of American Politicians who try to force Roman Catholics to go against their core beliefs.
